Our Story
I’ve wanted a shop of my own since I was a kid. For a long time, it felt a little out of reach. I became a teacher, built a career I’m proud of, and still found myself coming back to the idea. Eventually, I decided to see what it would take to make it happen. I took on a second job, then a third. Some weeks ran to about 85 hours, but I knew what I was working toward. I wanted to build a shop that would last and give my family another reason to be proud of the Jackson name. I couldn’t have made this dream a reality on my own. I’ll always be grateful to the friends and family who stood by me every step of the way.
The name Gotham 1807 comes from my years teaching American history and my love of a good joke. In 1807, Washington Irving and his fellow writers called New York City “Gotham” in Salmagundi, where they had some fun at the city’s expense. I liked the idea of giving a New York–style bagel shop a name with a little history and a sense of humor. I look forward to welcoming you in.
